Pregnancy Q & A

What should I do if I think I’m pregnant?

If you think you might be pregnant, book an appointment at Sunflower Women’s Health Care to find out for sure, so you can get the right care and ensure you and your baby stay healthy during the pregnancy.

At your appointment, Dr. Hutchison can confirm your pregnancy and calculate your due date. She also goes through your medical history and discusses how you feel, your experience of pregnancy if you have any, and factors that could influence the pregnancy, such as genetic disorders or chronic health problems.

Dr. Hutchison takes blood and urine samples to check for:

  • Anemia
  • HIV
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis
  • Immunity against rubella (German measles)
  • Immunity against varicella (chickenpox)
  • Kidney disease
  • Infections
  • Blood sugar levels

Dr. Hutchison then carries out a physical exam, including an internal pelvic exam to check your reproductive organs, taking cell samples to check for any signs of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) or cervical cancer. She also records your weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate.

Why do I need to see an obstetrician during pregnancy?

Most women go through pregnancy without experiencing any problems with their own or their baby’s health, but there’s a whole range of minor and more serious problems that can arise during pregnancy. Also, some women do have what are called high-risk pregnancies that require specialist management, for example, if you have diabetes or you develop a condition like preeclampsia during your pregnancy, it means you have a higher risk of experiencing complications.

Seeing an experienced obstetrician like Dr. Hutchison and having the right prenatal care reassures you that all is well. Regular screenings and monitoring throughout the pregnancy ensure that if there are any problems, they can be dealt with promptly, preventing unnecessary risk.

Prenatal care also helps you make sure you’re eating the right kinds of foods for optimal nutrition, taking appropriate exercise, getting the emotional support you need, and finding ways to relieve stress.

Dr. Hutchison can assist with the less enjoyable aspects of pregnancy like morning sickness and backache, and she can help you prepare for the birth and being a new mom. Dr. Hutchison and her team have many years of experience in supporting women so they can enjoy their pregnancy and deliver healthy babies.

How often should I see my gynecologist during pregnancy?

Once you have your first antenatal appointment at Sunflower Women’s Health Care, Dr. Hutchison advises you on how often you need to see her, which is typically once a month to start with, then increases in frequency as the due date gets nearer.

As well as regular checkups, you can see how the baby’s developing when you have your ultrasound scans, and listen to its heartbeat. There are also several tests that you need to consider that look for signs of specific problems with the fetus, such as Down syndrome or spina bifida, and you may wish to undergo genetic screening tests as well.

Pregnancy is a time when you need a professional health care team you can trust to keep you and your baby well, and you won’t find a better team than Dr. Hutchison and the staff at Sunflower Women’s Health Care. Call them today if you think you’re pregnant or know for sure that a baby is on the way, or book an appointment online.
